New and optimized materials are the key to sustainable technologies of the future and are increasingly being developed in a multidisciplinary digital and data-driven context. The summer school Materials 4.0: Exploration and design of materials across the scales takes up this idea and deals with different approaches and practical examples that bring together numerical mechanics, data and computer science, materials science, mechanical engineering, mathematics and physics. The event is organized by the Research Training Group D³ (RTG 2868) Data-Driven Design of Resilient Metamaterials, the Dresden Center for Computational Materials Science (DCMS) and the Dresden Center for Intelligent Materials (DCIM). It will take place from August 26 to 29 at TU Dresden.

Over four days, more than 45 students and young scientists from 14 countries will meet with internationally recognized experts to discuss the development and application of data-driven approaches for the cross-scale exploration and development of novel materials. Keynote speakers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, TU Delft, TU Berlin, the University of Duisburg-Essen, the University of Stuttgart, the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research, Forschungszentrum Jülich and TU Bergakademie Freiberg were invited to give presentations. Presentations by Dresden researchers will give participants an excellent insight into the wide range of activities on the topic at the location and in particular into the aims and areas of work of the Research Training Group.

The summer school aims to strengthen cooperation between the participating institutions, pool their interdisciplinary research expertise and thus further increase the attractiveness of the location for national and international students and postdocs. The event is financially supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) via the Research Training Group D³ (RTG 2868) and the DRESDEN-concept Science and Innovation Campus, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Free State of Saxony as part of the Excellence Strategy of the Federal and State governments.
