Scientific work from grade 11 - visiting students at the Institute of Geotechnical Engineering

Christoph Berthold works in the geotechnical laboratory like a scientist.
How do you introduce students to scientific work already in the upper secondary school? Since the beginning of October, the Institute of Geotechnical Engineering has been assisting Christoph Berthold, a student at the Martin-Anderson-Nexö-Gymnasium in Dresden, in writing his annual scientific paper, which is mandatory for students at the school with a mathematics and science profile. The topic of the work is: Settlement calculation under a flat foundation. Settlement calculations under structures or earthworks are among the essential tasks in geotechnics. Wilhelm Steinbrenner developed a method for this purpose as early as 1934, which is still used today. Like a true geotechnical engineer, Mr. Berthold will deal with the determination of settlements under a multi-story residential building as part of his annual scientific thesis. He will be supervised by Dr.-Ing. Kornelia Nitzsche. Of particular importance are the laboratory tests carried out on the institute's premises, which are used to determine the relevant soil parameters for the calculations.
