Strengthening with TRC – Simple and Clever

Application of textile reinforced concrete
In an industrial building, unscheduled deformations in concrete floor slabs as well as damages to the solid wall construction on the upper floor were observed. An analysis of the affected areas of the ceiling revealed that 4-5 cm²/m of the statically required flexural tensile reinforcement had not been built into the lower layer. This suggests that a mistake during the construction process caused these damages. According to standards, the construction’s stability had to be evaluated as precarious. Consequently, the floor slab above the ground floor had to be strengthened.
The method which was finally used to implement the statically required reinforcement was based on a special proposition made by the Deutsches Zentrum Textilbeton (DZT) of TUDAG which suggested applying a textile reinforced concrete layer to the flexural tensile zone. Based on the suggestion to restore the building by means of three layers of textile carbon reinforcement, the textile reinforced concrete strengthening was planned by planzwo GmbH in cooperation with TUDAG/DZT. The Institute of Concrete Structures from TU Dresden was responsible for checking the statics and the preparation of an expert opinion. The requested approval for this specific case was given within a narrow timeframe.
transverThis practice-related project serves to show that strengthening with textile reinforced concrete is a very efficient extension of earlier strengthening methods. At the same time, the project proved that TRC reinforcements are economically not only relevant for the strengthening of special structures. On the contrary, they can also be used advantageously for the reinforcement of common reinforced concrete slabs.
