Definition of research data management
For us as the Service Center Research Data, research data management (RDM) means:
"The planning and organization of the handling of data from research practice in compliance with good scientific practice."
- The emphasis on planning and organization shows that RDM begins even before data collection. It is a continuous process of organization that is deliberately designed to be open and does not end with data use or archiving.
- The term "data from research practice" describes research data in general, but also refers to other relevant aspects. This includes, in particular, ensuring the technical, organizational and professional context through careful documentation and suitable metadata.
- This data is always handled in accordance with good scientific practice (GWP). This not only forms the regulatory basis of RDM, but also serves as a practical guide to safeguard the value of research data and make it usable in the long term.
