The holistic approach to research data management
Every RDM project is unique and clear requirements often only develop in the course of implementation. In order to make sustainable decisions during this dynamic development, the holistic approach helps, in which the following four aspects are considered together:
- Conceptual measures: Avoid an isolated focus on IT tools. Every IT tool must be able to be well integrated into everyday research and the processes there. Technical systems alone are not enough. They should be complemented by conceptual measures to support the people who use these systems.
- IT systems: Once you have defined your research processes, you can find IT systems that support them in the best possible way. To do this, keep an eye on the available IT infrastructure and evaluate which of these systems can cover your specific requirements.
- Resources and responsibilities: FDM projects always take up resources, and responsibilities need to be defined. Be aware of the available resources and adjust the expectations of the RDM project accordingly so that a culture of appreciation can be created that promotes sustainable commitment.
- Competencies: Be aware of the necessary (IT) competencies required by the RDM project and promote them.
A holistic approach prevents problems arising from a one-sided focus. By weighing up every aspect equally before every decision, you create the basis for the continuous and sustainable development of your RDM project, even under the challenges of day-to-day research and teaching.
