The Berlin engineer Dr. Franz Stolze is the inventor of the design concept of the gas turbine, which is still indispensable for energy, drive and process engineering today and in the context of the energy transition. Franz Stolze first described his single-shaft "fire turbine" in 1873. He was initially denied a patent for it. With the patent granted 24 years later for his essentially renamed "hot air machine" with a multi-stage axial compressor, the centrally arranged hot air generator, the multi-stage axial turbine and his attempt to realize his invention with the "Weißensee" experimental gas turbine, Franz Stolze laid the essential foundations for today's gas turbine technology. In 2010, the prize named after Franz Stolze was awarded for the first time at TU Dresden.
