Since 2009, congresses on the current state of Polish research in Germany have been held regularly with the significant participation of the German Poland Institute. While the first congresses focused primarily on German-language research on Poland, the congresses in Frankfurt/Oder (2017) and Halle/Saale (2020) also established themselves as an international platform and offered academics from Poland and Germany in particular, but also from other countries, the opportunity to network and exchange ideas.
TU Dresden will continue this series in 2024 with the 6th Congress of Polish Studies, which will be organized locally by the Center for Central and Eastern European Studies (ZMOE) and the Institute of Slavic Studies. Poland has been one of the core research areas of the ZMOE since its foundation, in which the Institute of Slavic Studies was directly involved. The general theme of the congress, "Umbrüche - Aufbrüche / Przełomy - przeobrażenia / Upheavals - New Beginnings", provides a variety of perspectives on historical and current developments in Poland. Russia's war against Ukraine represents the most recent radical upheaval for Poland and its neighboring countries, the consequences of which for society, the economy, politics and culture will also play an important role at the congress.
All information on deadlines and registration formalities can be found on the congress website. The application deadline for sections and individual presentations has already passed, but applications for discussion forums, project presentations and short presentations can still be submitted until mid-September or mid-December. However, the congress is also worthwhile beyond active participation. If you are studying in Dresden - just 90 km from the Polish border - and have always wanted to know more about Poland and the latest developments there or about German-Polish relations, this is the right place for you.
