Seminar: Current Topics in Software Fault Tolerance

Announcements:

• Registration for the seminar for the winter semester 2024/2025 has started, a limited number of students can participate, so register as soon as possible.

Considering that software will never be free of bugs, techniques for software fault tolerance must be applied to make applications robust against such bugs. Theses techniques are still evolving and new results are usually presented in scientific publications. During the seminar, students should individually research a current topic in software fault tolerance and present it to the class at the end of the course.

Plagiarism is not allowed! If you copy text from others, both students or paper authors, you will be excluded from the seminar and not receive any credits or SWS.

The seminar should introduce you to research paper writing. Therefore, we organize it like a mini-conference with a hand-in submission, a paper review process, and a full-day workshop.

Organization

  The seminar has three goals:

• Research and study a (possibly unknown) topic on your own using corresponding literature.
• Practice writing a scientific article using LaTeX.
• Gain experience in giving presentations.

The procedure for the seminar is as follows:

• We provide a list of topics, each with a reference to a research paper that introduces the topic.
• You can choose your paper by sending the Moderator an e-mail.
• After choosing a paper, you should read it to get a first impression of the topic. Make use of the references to find related work.
• In the first meeting, I will explain the details of the seminar and give you hints for your presentation and the hand-in.
• This is followed by a break giving you time for preparing the talk and the hand-in. You should study work related to the chosen paper in depth in order to become an expert on the topic.
• Based on these studies, you must write a hand-in (8 pages) on the topic. At least 30% of the hand-in must cover a description of the research field and related work. You must submit the hand-in by the given deadline using the EasyChair conference management system (see link below).
• The hand-in should summarize the paper and related work so that other participants of the seminar are able to understand the topic. There is no need to present or repeat all details of the original paper. Instead, the hand-in should present the results of your own research, and how you understood the topic. The hand-in will then be distributed to the other students for reading.
• Per hand-in, two students are assigned to create a review. For the review, we will provide a questionary that will help you to focus on the important aspects. The reviews must be sent to EasyChair.
• Based on the reviews, you must prepare the final version of your hand-in that will be available to the other students.
• We will have a full-day workshop at the end of the semester where each student is to present the topic. You must prepare slides and give a presentation. Again, at least 30% of your talk must cover a description of the research field and related work. The presentation must not last longer than 20 minutes. In the following discussion about the topic, all students should participate, the reviewers in particular.
• The official language of the seminar is English, which means your talk is to be given and also the hand-in is to be written in English.
• Should you have any problems accessing/downloading the papers, contact the moderator via e-mail.
• The number of students who can attend the seminar is limited to 10, so it will be given to students who register first. Registration starts even before the kickoff meeting.

To successfully pass the seminar, each student must do the following timely. For non-presence days, deadlines are at 23:59:59 of the day specified in the table. Presence days require attendance at a specified time and room number in the table.
