Inauguration of the »Centre of Additive Manufacturing Dresden (AMCD)«

Inauguration of the »Centre of Additive Manufacturing Dresden (AMCD)«: Prof. Christoph Leyens (TUD/IWS), Prof. Eckhard Beyer (TUD/IWS), Minister of State Dr. Fritz Jaeckel, Prorector Prof. Gerhard Rödel, Mayor Dirk Hilbert (fltr)
With the opening ceremony of the "2nd International Symposium on Additive Manufacturing” the Chair of Materials Technology at the TU Dresden and the Fraunhofer IWS Dresden dedicated on 7 February 2017 their jointly run »Centre of Additive Manufacturing Dresden (AMCD)«. In addition to the 120 international guests, there were also present the state minister Dr. Fritz Jaeckel, mayor Dirk Hilbert and the prorector of the TU Dresden, Prof. Gerhard Rödel, all of whom gave welcoming speeches to the guests.
»With the establishment of the Centre of Additive Manufacturing there is a further visible sign of how our research alliance Dresden-concept functions: through scientific co-operation and the networking of the best people« said Prof. Gerhard Rödel about the significance of the cooperation model between the university and the Fraunhofer IWS. DRESDEN-concept is an alliance of the TU Dresden with external research intensive partners in Dresden.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology expanded in 2014 the Fraunhofer-Campus on the Winterbergstraße. The new building was, in co-operation with the TU Dresden, extensively equipped and, as a consequence, turned into one of the most multifaceted centres for additive manufacturing in Europe. Amongst other things the AMCD has a 5-axes-hybrid machining centre, an electron and two laser melting facilities, a computer tomographic scanner as well as modern 3D scanners. Scientists from different disciplines undertake research on materials and processes for additive manufacturing. Additive manufacturing denotes an innovative manufacturing technology in which the parts are made layer-by-layer on the basis of a digital 3D model. This opens new possibilities for the design and functional integration of parts. For example, electric conductors and sensors can be pressed into the part during its production, where these can give information about the operational load on the part.
After the opening ceremony of the AMCD there was the 2 day conference “2nd International Symposium on Additive Manufacturing” in the International Congress Centre Dresden. 260 experts from 28 countries met up to exchange know-how in the Saxon capital. In addition to 25 specialist talks, the accompanying exhibition and a poster session there was a World-Cafe with eight different themes related to additive manufacturing. Ten moderators, including employees of the Chair of Materials Science connected within 90 minutes with approximately 100 international participants. The results amongst others in the area of materials, design, profitability and education were reported-on on the second day of the conference by the director of the Institute of Materials Science, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Habil. Christoph Leyens.
